Upon receiving the request from the Sri Lankan client to create packaging for the adult diaper brand "Suwaya Puraveema", the top priority was to deeply explore the local cultural symbols of Sri Lanka. The team studied its traditional arts, extracting color and pattern elements from the patterns of Kandy dance costumes and the murals in the Dambulla Caves. For example, white, which symbolizes purity, gold with religious connotations, and geometric patterns of lotus flowers and scrolls were selected. We aimed to not only retain the practicality and simplicity of the European-style bag handle but also incorporate the cultural genes of Sri Lanka, making the packaging a carrier of culture.
For the core features of the adult diaper, such as the unfolded state, 魔术贴 (Velcro) attachment areas, three-dimensional leak-proof edges, and absorbent core, the design team adopted a realistic style. The unfolded white diaper was depicted, accurately portraying the texture and attachment structure of the Velcro. Lines were used to highlight the upright shape of the three-dimensional leak-proof edges, and the absorbent core was shown through a semi-transparent layered effect, allowing consumers to intuitively understand the product functions. Ensure that details are clearly distinguishable from the front view.
The packaging material was chosen as plastic. To balance practicality and texture, multiple rounds of testing were conducted. The basic version used matte frosted plastic, which is anti-fingerprint and looks premium. The high-end version partially used UV printing to simulate the texture of traditional Sri Lankan fabrics, such as the concave-convex texture of Jaffna embroidery. The European-style bag handle was optimized for load-bearing structure and designed into a woven belt shape, echoing the elements of traditional Sri Lankan costumes while ensuring convenient carrying.
Inspired by the murals of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, golden lotus patterns were used as the background, and light brown fabric-like textures were used as the base. The brand name "Suwaya Puraveema" was presented in a gold traditional Sinhala font, and the English "High Absorption Core & Leak-Proof Edge" below explained the functions. The product features were integrated with religious cultural symbols. After feedback from the client, the density of the patterns was adjusted to make the visual more balanced.
Elements such as elephants and blue lotuses from Yala National Park were extracted, and a gradient green watercolor was used as the base to create a sense of ecology. The soft fluff texture on the surface of the diaper was highlighted, and the layered structure of the absorbent core was shown through a transparent window. Due to the client's concern about overly bright colors, the saturation of the background was reduced, and the display of product details was enhanced, making the natural elements and function descriptions more harmonious.
Focusing on modern buildings in Colombo, an indigo gradient with white lines was used to create the scene. The unfolded close-up of the diaper dominated. The Velcro area was marked with dark gray anti-slip patterns, and the English "Quick Dry System & Elastic Sides" clearly presented the functions. According to market research, the complexity of the building silhouettes was simplified, highlighting the simple and practical European style of the packaging, which was in line with the aesthetic of young consumers.
After multiple rounds of communication and confirmation of the design scheme, it entered the sampling stage. The color reproduction of the plastic material, the precision of UV printing, and the load-bearing capacity of the bag handle were tested. According to the feedback, the ink ratio and printing pressure were adjusted. The final packaging not only retained the simplicity and practicality of European design but also deeply integrated Sri Lankan culture, accurately displayed the functional details of the diaper, became a cultural and practical carrier connecting the brand and consumers, and helped "Suwaya Puraveema" establish a unique image in the Sri Lankan market.
